AIZAWL | July 24, 2026: The North East Students' Organization (NESO) on Monday strongly condemned the alleged use of excessive force by police against students during a peaceful protest in New Delhi on July 20, 2026, calling it an assault on democratic rights.
In a press statement, NESO said students participating in the demonstration were subjected to baton charges and tear gas. The organization also alleged that plainclothes personnel armed with lathis were deployed against unarmed protesters.
"The disturbing scenes of baton charges, the use of tear gas and the reported deployment of plainclothes personnel armed with lathis against unarmed students represent an alarming assault on democratic values and the constitutional rights of citizens to peacefully assemble and express legitimate grievances," the statement said.
NESO criticized the Government of India for what it termed an "insensitive handling" of issues affecting students nationwide. According to the organization, instead of engaging in dialogue, authorities resorted to "repression and intimidation."
The protest centered on long-standing grievances including repeated competitive examination paper leaks and demands for greater transparency, accountability and integrity in recruitment and examination systems.
"The grievances raised by the protesting students... are legitimate and demand immediate attention," NESO said. "The aspirations and hard work of countless deserving students must never be sacrificed because of systemic failures, corruption or administrative negligence."
The organization expressed solidarity with the protesters and concern for those injured in the crackdown. "We wish them a speedy and complete recovery and reaffirm our steadfast support for their pursuit of justice and institutional reforms," NESO stated.
NESO has urged the Centre to immediately address student demands through "sincere dialogue," ensure accountability for the use of force, and implement comprehensive reforms to restore credibility to the country's examination and recruitment processes.

The aspirations and hard work of countless deserving students must never be sacrificed because of systemic failures, corruption or administrative negligence.
NESO stands in unwavering solidarity with all the aggrieved students who courageously participated in the peaceful movement and extends its heartfelt concern to those who sustained injuries during the police crackdown. We wish them a speedy and complete recovery and reaffirm our steadfast support for their pursuit of justice and institutional reforms.
