Mizoram Battalion NCC, Lunglei was inaugurated today by Pu Lal Thanhawla, the
Hon'ble Chief Minister of Mizoram at Electric Veng, Lunglei.
In
his inaugural speech, the Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to the senior
offciers in charge of NCC in North East India for their undertaking. He
encouraged the youths of Mizoram to take interest in being NCC cadets as this
was a positive step towards self-discipline, nation building and being good
citizens as well as a good foundation for career building.
NCC
is a uniformed youth organisation and has enormous potential for nation
building. The NCC provides opportunities to the youth of the country for their
all-round development with a sense of duty, commitment, dedication, discipline
and moral values so that they become able leaders and useful citizens. The NCC
provides exposure to the cadets in a wide range of activities, with a distinct
emphasis on Social Services, Discipline and Adventure Training.
There
was limited NCC coverage in South Mizoram and Chief Minister Pu Lal Thanhawla
took up a case with the Govt. of India to raise a NCC Battalion to cover South
Mizoram. Accordingly, Govt. of India issued orders for raising of 2 Mizoram
Battalion NCC at Lunglei. Mizoram Bn. NCC will have a strength of 1,120 Senior
NCC Cadets and 2,400 Junior NCC Cadets - a total strength of 3,520 NCC Cadets.
The Battalion will cover not only Lunglei district but the entire South
Mizoram, ie., four districts of Lunglei, Saiha, Lawngtlai and Serchhip.
The
present strength of NCC Cadets in Mizoram is 5,218. Post raising of 2 Mizoram
Battalion NCC, the total strength of NCC Cadets in Mizoram will increase
substantially to 8,738. The Battalion will be raised in a phased manner over a
period of three years for Senior Cadets (SD/SW) and two years for Junior Cadets
(JD/JW).
Among
the dignitaries present at the event were Minister Pu Joseph Lalhimpuia, MLA
Lunglei East, Minister Pu PC Lalthanliana, MLA Lunglei North, Dr. Ankita
Chakravarty (IAS), DC, Col KS Dhindsa, CO 1 Mizo Battalion NCC Aizawl, Lt. Col
Clement Lalhmingthanga and Pu Zothanmawia, Director Sports & Youth
Services, Govt of Mizoram. The Battalion will function under NCC Directorate
North Eastern Region, Shillong headed by Maj. Gen Raju Chauhan, Additional
Director General.
In
a message, Maj Gen Raju Chauhan, Additional Director General, NCC Directorate
North Eastern Region, Shillong said, “The raising will enable better inclusion
and representation of South Mizoram districts in Local, National and International
level NCC events and activities. In addition, the State will have a ready pool
of disciplined, socially sensitive and highly motivated youths, ie., 8,738 NCC
Cadets at any given time. The Battalion will also provide an ideal launching
pad to the youth in South Mizoram to ultimately join the Indian Armed
Forces."
Along
with the inauguration of 2 Mizoram Battalion NCC, the Chief Minister also laid
the foundation stone for construction of Agri-Marketing & Training
Infrastructure under the Commerce and Industries Department and inaugurated the
Skill Development Training Centre.
