Speech of General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), Hon’ble Governor of Mizoram on the occasion of Celebration of awarding of A+ Grade to Mizoram University by NAAC at MZU Auditorium on 5th August, 2025
Prof. Dibakar Chandra Deka, Vice Chancellor, Mizoram University, Prof. Pravakar Rath, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lalnundanga, Registrar, Members of Faculty & Staff, Dear Students
I am very happy to be here as we celebrate the awarding of A+ Grade to Mizoram University (MZU) by NAAC.
Mizoram University was established in 2000, and started functioning in the year 2001. Within this short period of time, the University has become one of the leading universities in North-East India, as also the country.
As the foremost institution of higher learning in the state, MZU has created multifarious opportunities for students and researchers to make meaningful contributions to development at various levels.
As the nation continues to develop, the University must also continually grow. Despite the short span of its existence, Mizoram University has achieved a number of noteworthy milestones.
The University was accredited Grade ‘A’ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in the first cycle with CGPA of 3.12 in 2014. In the second cycle, it was re-accredited Grade ‘A’ with CGPA of 3.16 in 2019. In the recent third cycle, MZU has been awarded A+ grade with CGPA of 3.30.
Consistently being ranked among the Top 100 universities in the country by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). In the latest NIRF Rankings, it was ranked 77th among universities in India. Mizoram University has also been ranked as high as 15th among Central Universities by the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF).
MZU is one of the pioneering universities in the country that has successfully implemented the New Education Policy. Both the PG courses and UG syllabus have been revised as per the National Education Policy 2020 guidelines.
Multiple entry and exit options, along with Academic Bank of Credits are fully implemented. The University is advancing on research publications, boasting an index of 98, and has secured as many as 46 patents. Online courses under MOOCs and SWAYAM have been introduced, making MZU the first university to open online courses in the north east region.
The DRDO Industry-Academia Centre of Excellence at MZU is the only centre of its kind in North East India. Mizoram University also has a host of other facilities and establishments, including State Biotech Hub, DST-Bioinformatics Centre and DST-Incubation Centre, among others.
It is noteworthy that MZU has taken various steps to create a disabled-friendly campus. The Central Library has been set up with Braille facilities for blind students. Ramps and lifts have been placed for easy access. There are Divyangjan-friendly washrooms, as well as other assistive technologies and facilities for persons with disabilities.
The University Campus is eco-friendly, having been graded ‘A’ by the Mizoram State Pollution Board. MZU was awarded ISO Certification for Energy Management System, Environmental Management System, and Quality Management System in 2023. It is also an active centre for several extension activities such as NSS, Red Ribbon Club, Eco Club, Innovation Club, Techno Club, etc. The diversity of faculty and students makes the University a unique place for teaching and learning.
Besides faculty and students from various parts of India, MZU has as many as 43 international students from Japan, U.S, Sudan, Ecuador, Tanzania, Nigeria, Uganda, Namibia, Lesotho, Egypt, Norway, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Myanmar.
I am confident that Mizoram University will continue to grow and provide its students with enhanced facilities and motivation in achieving their professional goals.
We must also take care to produce responsible citizens who will contribute to the overall betterment of society wherever they go.
The achievement of MZU in attaining A+ Grade is a proud moment for the State of Mizoram. I have been told that since 2018, only three other universities in North East India have been awarded A+ Grade by NAAC. I congratulate everyone who has played a part in this shared success.
I would also like the students and faculty alike to remember that you have an important responsibility to defend the name of your university and work hard to ensure that through your achievements the University is also hailed.
As I conclude, I urge the University to continue to work for the successful implementation of NEP 2020. By focussing on research and innovation, we can ensure that our country remains a ‘Technology Leader’ rather than a ‘Technology Follower’.
MZU must play a leading role in our aim to make India a global knowledge superpower. I am certain that if we give our best efforts, we will ultimately reach our aim of attaining the goal of Viksit Bharat by the year 2047.
Ka lawm e. Jai Hind.
