Press statement of Former Union Minister & AICC in-charge - Mizoram Bhakta Charan Das.

PRESS STATEMENT
The 29thJuly, 2021

1.   Assam and other North Eastern States, such as Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh have a long-standing border disputes. While several attempts have been made by successive Chief Ministers of  Assam and Mizoram for settlement of the border dispute in a peaceful manner.  With the deployment of a large contingent of police by Himanta Biswas Sarma, the new the Chief Minister of Assam,   exchange of fire took place between Mizoram and Assam police on the 26thJuly, 2021 at the outskirt of Vairengte, Mizoram.  Unfortunately, the violent confrontation has cost the lives of 7 Assam policemen and several policemen and civilians  were injured on both sides. The strategy adopted by the Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswas Sharma is detrimental to the socio-political fabric of the North Eastern States.

2.   As the  present border dispute is not an international boundary dispute, but an inter-state border dispute within the  Union of India, conducive atmosphere   must be created to find ways and means  for amicable and permanent solution. It is my humble request to the Chief Ministers of  the two states to settle their long-standing border dispute over dialogue in a cordial relationship.

3.   It’s sorry state of affairs that economic blockade has been imposed along National Highways-306 to stop the movement of passenger vehicle and vehicle carrying essential commodities including medical oxygen for COVID-19 patients  into the state of Mizoram by some local people in Assam and the destruction of railway tracks/lines at Mohammedpur Railway Station and Ramnathpur Railway Station in Hailakandi District, Assam.  The imposition of economic blockade against own fellow citizens is against the constitution of India and cannot be justified  in any circumstances. Therefore, I request the Government of India to intervene upon the Government of Assam   for immediate removal of  economic blockade in Assam in order to resume  vehicular movement  along the National Highway-306 and restoration of the only Railway Lines connecting to Mizoram.
